The New Science of Learning: Advances in Brain-Based Research

Todd Zakrajsek is the Director of the International Teaching Learning Cooperative and immediate past Executive Director of the Center for Faculty Excellence at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to his work at UNC, he was the inaugural Director of the Faculty Center for Innovative Teaching at Central Michigan University and the founding Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at Southern Oregon University, where he taught in the psychology department as a tenured associate professor. Todd currently directs two annual Lilly Conferences on College and University Teaching and Learning. He also serves on advisory boards for the International Conference on Improving University Teaching, Lenovo Computer ERI, and Microsoft TEI. Dr. Zakrajsek received his Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Ohio University. He has published and presented widely on the topic of student learning, including workshops and keynote addresses in 38 states and 7 countries.

Terry Doyle is an author, educational consultant, and professor of retention and student success at Ferris State University, where he has worked for the past 37 years. From 1998 to 2009 he served as the senior instructor for faculty development and coordinator of the New to Ferris Faculty Transition Program for the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning at Ferris State. Terry has presented over 70 workshops on teaching and learning topics at regional, national, and international conferences since 2000. During the past five years he has worked with faculty in Taiwan, South Korea and in 100 different colleges and universities across the United States on ways to develop a learner centered teaching practice. He is the author of the book Learner Centered Teaching: Putting the Research on Learning Into Practice, which was featured in the Chronicle of Higher Education's Selected New Books in Higher Education in 2012, and the book Helping Students Learn in a Learner-Centered Environment: A Guide to Teaching in Higher Education (Stylus, 2008). He is the co-author of the book New Faculty Transition - An Ideal Program, published in 2004. His newest book, co-authored with Dr. Todd Zakrajsek, is titled The New Science of Learning: How Brain Research Is Revolutionizing the Way We Learn, and is written for college students. It was published in August 2013.
