Digital Transmediation and Revision

Digital transmediation can help answer a common question among teachers and parents: how do we improve middle school writing and make revision feel meaningful rather than tedious? In this article, Miami University faculty author Katherine E. Batchelor shows how shifting writing from one mode to another — for example, turning a short story into a comic, animation, or digital poster — encourages students to rethink and strengthen their ideas. Because transmediation invites students to re-create meaning across modes, it naturally supports multimodality, digital composition, and flexible revision strategies.

Working with seventh graders in a three-week flash science fiction unit, Batchelor introduced a range of digital tools such as iMovie, Glogster, Pixton, and GoAnimate. When students translated their stories into these formats, they reported seeing their writing “in a whole new way.” Some, like Amy, abandoned their first drafts entirely after their digital compositions sparked stronger ideas. Others, like Darin, reshaped their stories after creating scenes that looked and felt like video games — genres connected to their out-of-school literacies. Both students described how digital transmediation encouraged more detailed, intentional revisions.

The study shows that multimodal composition not only strengthens writing skills but also transforms revision into a creative act of inquiry. Students described revision as more engaging, more reflective, and even enjoyable when paired with digital play. By tapping into the cultural tools students already use, transmediation supports richer writer identities and deeper learning.
