Describe your discoveries with your undergraduate research

“When I was doing the research, I found some practical ways that we could change some of the things the United States is already doing for the better. For example, I realized how for a lot of immigrants of color we use modifiers for them like Asian American, Chinese American, Nigerian American, African American. But for people who migrated here from Ireland, we don’t call them Irish American. We just call them American, even though maybe their family has been in the United States the same amount of time as a Chinese American family. It’s not until someone points it out that you can actually see it.”

How did you choose your majors?

“I purposely chose my two majors because I really wanted to work in immigrant advocacy. And, I feel like this preliminary research has just given me not only some statistics but some background information on how I can go about trying to change the United States for the better when working with the international population. This research project has fueled my passion for going into this field and doing that advocacy work for the future.”

What is your advice for those wanting to do research in your field?

“I would say definitely talk out your idea. I’d just highly recommend that if they are confused on where to start, maybe start with something you’re passionate about or relates to you, and then branch out from there. Also, talk to your advisor or someone who is more trained in the subject, and see how it goes from there.”

What does "Love and Honor at Miami" mean to you?

“Love and Honor is the motto of Miami. Miami has allowed me to connect with individuals who not only love and honor me but I love and honor as well.”
