Batchelor Selected for Fulbright Specialist Program

Coordinator of Adolescent and Young Adult Education and Associate Professor Katherine Batchelor has been accepted to the Fulbright Specialist roster, with a future project to be determined.

A program of the U.S. Department of State and World Learning, the Fulbright Specialist Program is a unique opportunity for U.S. academics and established professionals to engage in two- to six-week, project-based exchanges at host institutions across the globe. Recipients of Fulbright Specialist awards are selected on the basis of academic and professional achievement, demonstrated leadership in their field, and their potential to foster long-term cooperation between institutions in the U.S. and abroad. Prospective Specialists and host institutions participate in a competitive selection and matching process.

According to Karla Guinigundo, director of global partnerships at Global Initiatives, the Fulbright Specialist Program provides a unique opportunity for faculty once they are accepted to the roster for their discipline. "The flexibility for multiple, short-term teaching, consulting, or project work through the Fulbright Specialist Program is attractive to many faculty who may not be able to take a semester or academic year leave," she said.

Batchelor's research interests include critical literacy and adolescents' literacy practices. She is a National Board Certified Teacher and member of the National Writing Project.
