Why Miami University?
I ultimately chose Miami University because it offered a strong Psychology program along with the opportunity to pursue a Commerce minor, which aligns well with my goal of entering the medical field. I was especially drawn to the research opportunities available to undergraduate students, as I wanted to gain hands-on experience early in my academic career. Additionally, the scholarships and academic support provided by Miami made it a great fit for both my educational and financial goals. Overall, Miami stood out as a place where I could grow academically, get involved in meaningful research, and prepare for my future career.
How did you choose your major?
I had always known that I wanted to work in the medical field, but at first I wasn't sure which degree would help me get there. I was inspired to go into psychological science after talking with a staff member, and it quickly proved to be the appropriate choice for me. Through this major, I had the opportunity to engage in research, strengthen my analytical skills, and gain a deeper understanding of human behavior. As I continued in the program, I found myself genuinely interested in studying people on a deeper level: how they think, feel, and respond to different situations. Over time, this interest grew into a passion, and I realized that Psychological Science not only aligned with my career goals but also with my curiosity about understanding others.
Please list the groups, clubs, jobs, etc. that you were/are involved with.
I am an active member of the Psychology Club at Miami University, where I participate in meetings, discussions, and events related to mental health and the field of psychology. I am also involved in committee meetings, where I contribute to planning activities and collaborate with other members to support the club’s initiatives.
As a Miami student, what are some of your awards and accomplishments?
During my time at Miami University, I have been recognized for both my academic performance and my involvement in the campus community. I received the Best Classroom Performance Award from the Department of Psychology and Social Behavior Sciences, which reflects my dedication to learning and engagement in the classroom. I was also nominated as a graduation speaker, which was a meaningful recognition of my communication skills and growth. In terms of leadership, this summer I'll be working as an orientation leader, where I'll assist and mentor new students as they adjust to college life. I see this position as a chance to develop relationships, mentor people, and have a great impact on the Miami community.
Did you have any special experiential learning opportunities that have influenced you in a positive way?
My participation in research and community service has been one of my most significant chances for experiential learning. I worked as a volunteer with Harvest for Hunger, supporting programs to feed underprivileged kids. I was able to give back to the community and gain a greater understanding of the significance of solving food insecurity as a result of this trip, which had a huge impact. Another direct and significant way that I have helped others is by donating blood. Furthermore, my time as a research assistant has been life-changing. I was forced to step outside of my comfort zone, particularly when I had to give presentations at conferences. I used to be afraid of public speaking, but these experiences helped me gain confidence and greatly enhance my communication abilities. All things considered, these experiences have shaped my confidence, empathy, and communication abilities while also aiding in my career and personal development.
What are your plans after you graduate from Miami? What sort of career are you aiming for? What is your dream job?
After graduating from Miami University, I plan to attend Physician Assistant (PA) school to continue my education in the medical field. My long-term goal is to become a surgical PA, where I can be directly involved in patient care and assist in surgical procedures. Creating a sense of comfort and trust for patients throughout what can frequently be stressful and overwhelming circumstances is something I am particularly enthusiastic about. I want to make patients feel comfortable, informed, and supported throughout their treatment by combining my professional expertise with effective communication and empathy. My ultimate goal is to continue learning and developing in the medical field while having a significant influence on people's lives.
