Miami welcomes students for host of summer camps

Campers participate in Miami University's Camp Excel, a four-day, three-night immersive college experience camp for Cincinnati Public Schools students in grades 6-8.
College campuses across the country are in the midst of hosting various summer camps and clinics. In fact, more than 25 different camps are scheduled this summer at Miami University’s Oxford campus. Summer camps are a great way to introduce students to the school and the experience of what the university has to offer. These camps range from academics to performing arts and athletics, allowing students to explore their passions and interests in a college setting.

Camp Excel

Camp Excel is a four-day, three-night immersive college experience camp for Cincinnati Public Schools students in grades 6-8, directed by Rodney Coates, professor of Global and Intercultural Studies. This camp took place from June 2-5 and hosted about 100 students. Hosting students for the fourth year, Camp Excel has been able to impact over 400 students from the Cincinnati area.

The goal of Camp Excel is to help students rediscover their dreams and futures that were lost during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Faculty and staff from Miami University academic departments like Business, Computer Science, Humanities, Theatre, Gaming, and Robotics collaborate to give students a firsthand experience of what life on a college campus is like.

Athletic Camps

Miami Athletics will be hosting approximately 25 RedHawk summer camps across nine different sports, including: basketball, baseball, volleyball, hockey, figure skating, swimming, and football.

While many of the RedHawk summer camps are designed for students in high school or middle schools, there are a few camps such as volleyball (grade 4 and up), basketball (grade 8 and under), and swim camps (age 7 and up) that are open to younger student-athletes.

These camps are taking place throughout the summer.

Performing Arts Camps

Miami hosts the Missoula Children’s Theatre Drama Camp, Aug. 4-8. Participants will work to put on a public performance of “The Jungle Book.” Registration is now open for students in grades 1-12, with an open role for every participant.

During this camp, participants will have the opportunity to work with Missoula Children’s Theatre professionals and Miami University students doing workshops, activities, and rehearsal of a full-scale musical production. Roles for this performance will be written for students of all ages, skills, and experience levels based on the audition process that will take place on the first day of camp. This camp is designed to help students build self-confidence, practice teamwork, and improve performance skills in a safe and supportive environment.

Recreation Camps

Running from the beginning of June until the end of July, the Rec Camp offers week-long sessions and is designed to help students ages 7-11 become more independent and confident while in a safe learning environment.

One parent of a camper, Krystal Wright, said, "I've found that the Miami Rec Camp is packed with a variety of engaging activities — sports, swimming, nature exploration, arts, and more. This was my daughter’s third year attending, and every year she comes home with new skills, confidence, and joy. The counselors — amazing Miami University students — are truly top-notch. One in particular has been with my daughter for all three years, getting to know her personality and forming a significant connection with her. Watching that relationship grow has been incredible. If you live in or around Oxford, or work for Miami, and have young children, I highly recommend this program. Check it out — your kids will have a fun, active day right here at Miami University. These campers aren’t just having a great summer — they’re part of our future here at Miami."
Established in 1809, Miami University is located in Oxford, Ohio, with regional campuses in Hamilton and Middletown, a learning center in West Chester, and a European study center in Luxembourg.
