Miami University Citizenship and Democracy Week events, Sept. 15-22

Miami University will commemorate the 238th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution with its 10th annual Citizenship and Democracy Week. The series of events is held on Miami’s Oxford and Regionals campuses to promote civic learning and engagement. 

Citizenship and Democracy Week events are sponsored by the Menard Family Center for Democracy, the Department of Justice and Community Studies, and a range of campus and community partners. 

A highlight this year is the Miami University Department of Theatre production of “What the Constitution Means to Me” by Heidi Schreck, with performances Sept. 16-21.

A U.S. District Court Naturalization ceremony will be held Sept.17 during which nearly 100 people will be formally sworn in as U.S. citizens. For the first time, this ceremony will be held at Armstrong Student Center on the Oxford campus. 

 

Citizenship and Democracy Week events include: 

Sept. 15, 10 a.m. On-campus Oral Arguments for the Ohio Court of Appeals for the 12th District. Fritz Pavilion, Armstrong Student Center. 

  • Watch our government in action as an Ohio appeals court hears arguments in real cases in a special on-campus proceeding.

Sept. 15, Noon: Student presentations: “Rapid Rights!,”  Jack Rhodes Study, Mosler Hall, Hamilton.

  • The interactive forum features brief research presentations on selected civil liberties issues by advanced students in the Department of Justice & Community Studies.  

Sept. 16, Noon: Rapid Rights!  Atrium, Armstrong Student Center, Oxford. 

  • This event includes visiting students from Christ (Deemed to be) University in India.

Sept. 16 - Sept. 21, 7:30 p.m.: “What the Constitution Means to Me” by Heidi Schreck; a Miami University Department of Theatre production. Gates-Abegglen Theater, Center for Performing Arts, Oxford. 

  • The play — which dives into how America’s founding document still shapes real lives — was a finalist for the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Sept. 17, 10 a.m.U.S. District Court Naturalization Ceremony, Fritz Pavilion, Armstrong Student Center, Oxford.

  • Miami will host the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio for the formal swearing-in of nearly 100 new U.S. citizens.

Sept. 17, 1 p.m.: Free Speech Forum. Moderated by Daniel Hall, professor of Justice and Community Studies; Jack Rhodes Study, Mosler Hall, Hamilton.

Sept. 17: 5 p.m.: O’Hara Lecture on Law and Politics: “A Conversation with Justice Jennifer Brunner ’78, Ohio Supreme Court.” 319 Kreger Hall, Oxford. 

Sept. 18, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.: Blood drive, Versiti Blood Center. Make an appointment,  Bloodmobile at Mosler Hall parking lot, Hamilton. 

Sept. 22, 4:30 p.m.: The Sherry Corbett Memorial Lecture, “Legal Plunder: The Predatory Dimensions of Criminal Justice" by Joshua Page. 319 Kreger Hall, Oxford.
