Ten Miami students earn honors at singing competition

Miami makes presence known at NATS with largest ever group
NATS is a premier organization for voice teachers and coaches from all over the world, with around 10,000 members. Each state has its own NATS chapter that hosts a competition once a year to bring students and voice coaches together.
As the largest group to ever represent the university, Miami’s students collectively played almost 100 pieces. Starting in late August, these students worked tenaciously, collaborating with faculty to choose three to five pieces each that followed the specific guidelines of the categories they were competing in. In the six weeks leading up to the competition, students learn to understand and perfect the inflection of different foreign languages they will be signing.
“As an educator I love seeing the way the students are able to observe each other signing and the way each of them support and encourage one another. It makes me proud to see the support as we are stronger together as a group” voice professor Alison Acord said.
The competition provides a positive environment for students and voice coaches to provide feedback to one another. Voice coaches have the opportunity to judge students and give written feedback to help them expand their singing abilities.
