Tuck’s new book explores the stories of survivors of the Mount Vesuvius eruption
Tuck’s “Escape from Pompeii: The Great Eruption of Mount Vesuvius and its Survivors” explores the stories of the people who fled and the lives they rebuilt afterward. Tuck settles a debate that has raged for centuries: Did the eruption really leave no survivors? Tuck revises the narrative from one of death and loss to a story of survival and lives restored.
After eight years of scouring databases of tens of thousands of Roman inscriptions on places ranging from walls to tombstones, Tuck found evidence of more than 200 survivors in 12 cities. He has written about his findings for The Conversation and been featured in the PBS documentary “Pompeii: The New Dig.”
In 2024, Tucker also gave a special presentation for the Cincinnati Museum Center’s “POMPEII: The Exhibition.”
