Creative Career Day connects students with creative professionals

Representatives from 16 different organization are scheduled to attend

Next week, aspiring creatives at Miami University will have the opportunity to invest in their futures through a Center for Career Exploration and Success event.

The second-annual Creative Career Day is set for Monday, March 2 from noon to 4:30 p.m. in the Armstrong Student Center Pavilion. This professional development and networking event is designed for students interested in any creative field, from communication design to the performing or visual arts.

“Creative Career Day is truly for everyone,” said Madeleine Hood, the event organizer out of the Center for Career Exploration and Success. “You never know which conversation will spark an idea, open a door, or connect you to your next opportunity. Showing up is often the first and most important step.”

Representatives from 16 different organizations are scheduled to attend, including ArtsWave, Cincinnati Education Television, the Cincinnati Ensemble Theatre, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Fifth Third Bank, Kroger, MarketVision, and the Shakespeare Theatre Association.

“This event is about watering the seed of creativity that exists in all spaces and industries,” Hood said. “The range of organizations represented alone shows that creativity isn’t confined to one major or one career path.”

The afternoon will begin with a welcome lunch and panel from noon to 1 p.m. Students will hear from creative professionals about current trends in the job market and ways they can differentiate themselves in creative spaces.

Skill-building sessions will follow from 1:15 to 2 p.m. and 2:15 to 3 p.m. Students will have the option to choose from five different 45-minute workshops to strengthen their creative toolkits. The workshops include:

  • Interview Prep in the Creative Industry
  • Freelance and Gig Work
  • Building and Working in a Nonprofit and For-Profit Career/Networking Effectively
  • How to Structure and Present Your Portfolio: Design and Performing Arts Sessions

The event will conclude with a networking session from 3 to 4:30 p.m., allowing students to connect with professionals, explore full-time, internship, and co-op positions, and learn about freelance and volunteer opportunities.

“Students will walk away with a clearer understanding of how to position their skills, articulate their creative value, and navigate opportunities within creative industries,” Hood said. “They’ll also leave knowing their creativity has a place in the professional world and that there are real people and pathways available to help them get there.”

Students are free to join the sessions that works best for them.

Registration is strongly encouraged because lunch and small bites will be provided.

The Center for Career Exploration and Success offers Miami students a range of programs and events, including networking opportunities with employers and alumni, professional development workshops, and career exploration activities.
