Renowned author and educator delivered commencement address during Miami’s 2023 ceremony

Nicole Fleetwood, a 1994 graduate of Miami University, has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences for 2026.

A noted academic, curator, and author, Fleetwood is the Paulette Goddard Professor in Media, Culture, and Communication at New York University. The MacArthur Fellow’s book, “Marking Time: Art in the Era of Mass Incarceration,” earned acclaim for its focus on artists who have either been incarcerated or who are involved with prison-related issues.

“Marking Time” received the National Book Critics Award in Criticism, among several other honors. Fleetwood also curates a traveling exhibition based on “Marking Time,” which was called “one of the most important art moments in 2020” by the New York Times.

Fleetwood graduated from Miami’s School of Interdisciplinary Studies Western College Program. She delivered the university’s commencement address during the 2023 ceremony.

Founded in 1780, the Academy of Arts and Sciences “honors excellence and convenes leaders from every field of human endeavor to examine new ideas, address issues of importance to the nation and the world, and work together ‘to cultivate every art and science which may tend to advance the interest, honor, dignity, and happiness of a free, independent, and virtuous people.’”

Fleetwood was elected in Class IV – Humanities and Arts for Section 5 – Visual Arts.

The academy was founded during the American Revolution by John Adams, John Hancock, and 60 other scholars dedicated to advance learning in service to the public good. According to its website, the independent research center is an honorary society that “both recognizes and celebrates the excellence of its members and an independent research center convening leaders from across disciplines, professions, and perspectives to address significant challenges.”
Established in 1809, Miami University is located in Oxford, Ohio, with regional campuses in Hamilton and Middletown, a learning center in West Chester, and a European study center in Luxembourg.
