All of Miami University’s mobile safety tools are now in one place with the new RedHawk Safe app.
Weather procedures, the emergency Mobile BlueLight, and the Friendly Walk and Virtual Walkhome features are among the many resources available on RedHawk Safe, which replaces the current Rave Guardian app.
RedHawk Safe can be downloaded by Miami students, faculty, and staff, as well as visitors to the university’s campuses.
Walt Schneider, emergency manager for the Miami University Police Department, noted RedHawk Safe will be continually updated with new features and will be helpful on both a day-to-day basis and during campus events like game days, commencement celebrations, move-in weekend, and more.
“We want to get as many resources and safety materials to the community as possible,” Schneider said. “They’ll have everything in their hand and at their fingertips.”
The app launched on May 4 and is available for download from the Apple Store and Google Play.
Services include a safety chat, emergency plans and procedures, campus maps, support resources, and reporting options.
Schneider said MUPD explored what other universities offered in terms of safety apps before implementing RedHawk Safe through Rave AppArmor.
“Rave had the best options and the best toolbox,” Schneider said.
Members of the Miami community will continue to receive RedHawk Alert text messages and emails, and those messages will also come through RedHawk Safe. Students participating in first-year orientation will get an introduction to RedHawk Safe and be encouraged to utilize the new app.
“We want to explain what it does in real time and how it can assist students, not just in emergencies but in their day-to-day as well,” MUPD Chief Stephen VanWinkle said. “It’s a multifunctional app, with policies, safety procedures, resources, and more. It’s all right there.”
VanWinkle praised the app for its ability to communicate quickly and effectively with a large number of people.
“It’s been successfully implemented at other universities,” he said. “It is a reliable and fast delivery system. As a student, it gives you all that information right there in your hand, and it also allows us to reach the Miami community in a timely manner.”
