The final amenities in the $13 million project to create and expand recreation facilities for students are now open for use at Millett South Lawn.
A dog park, an outdoor workout space, and walking trails join the pickleball, tennis, and basketball courts that opened last month.
The area’s new synthetic turf multi-use intramural soccer and flag football fields opened before classes started this fall.
Expanded intramural fields at Chestnut Fields also opened earlier this fall, featuring multi-use synthetic turf fields with sports lighting that support two full-sized soccer fields; two softball fields; three flag football fields; rugby, lacrosse, and Ultimate Frisbee fields. Other amenities include concrete walkways and a plaza with benches and a drinking fountain.
Enhanced landscaping at both locations includes dozens of trees and other landscape plants. Ninety trees were planted at the Millett location and 29 at Chestnut Fields, according to John Porchowsky, project manager, capital projects, in Physical Facilities’ Planning, Architecture, and Engineering department.
“We have had an overwhelmingly positive response to the new fields,” Doug Curry, executive director of Recreation Services said. “New pickleball, tennis, and an outdoor basketball court have been great additions. The grounds and landscaping add to a first-class facility..”
The Chestnut facility response has also been very positive, Curry said. “Intramurals, club sports, and other groups have taken advantage of the facility. Club sports and Intramural competitions with lights have already been played with many positive comments. The lighting is fantastic.”
