I'm a senior, I'm about to graduate, and I've done a lot of cool things in college.
Student
I never thought that I was going to be an intramural curler. I never thought that I was going to be the student body president.
Student
These four years have been the biggest amount of growth I've seen in my entire life.
Student
It's not just about the academics, but like, what kind of person you turn into, which is super cool.
Katie
Welcome to the Sounds of College Life. I am here with Katie. Where did you go this week? Yeah, we did something a little different this week, it was Homecoming weekend, so we ended up going to the Uptown Madness event that was hosted by the men's and women's basketball team. We got to interact with a lot of people who were alumni here for the weekend, or their kids went here and they were alumni and they were visiting with their family. It was a really cool way to interact with the team and get some interaction between the players and coaches, cheerleaders and all that.
Michaela
Yeah, really cool. I feel like homecoming in general is such a fun time. Whether you're in middle school, high school or college, there's kind of a fun spirit around I remember in high school, like they do, like the homecoming weeks kind of leading up to the dance. And so I feel like it's just a great way to unite the community, kind of towards a common cause, and sports is such a wonderful way to do that.
Katie
I love going to the football games. I think they're such a cool way, like you said, to interact with other students and to come together for a common cause, especially if we're playing a team like, OU or somebody who's close to us. It's a really fun way to stay connected with everybody at the university. So I've always loved going to football games. I think the basketball games are also really fun. I'm excited to go to a couple this year.
Michaela
Yeah, and they have such great ways of involving and incorporating the students too. I feel like, you know, once you really go, you're like, oh my gosh, there's a contest for this, or I can go on the court for this. And one time, one of my friends, like, legit, won $500 just because we attended the game. So I feel like it's just such a way to enhance school spirit, and especially homecoming weekend, having all the alumni around, having the community involved. It really made it a fun atmosphere. So let's go check up Uptown to see what Uptown Madness is like.
Izzy
My name is Izzy. I'm from Michigan, and I saw Midnight Madness last night, and honestly, it looked like so much fun. There was a huge crowd, so many people there. When I walked by, everyone was cheering, chanting. It was so loud and so much fun.
Luke Skowjack
My name is Luke Skowjack, and I'm a guard, and I basically do whatever the team needs to win.
Carl Richburg
Carl Richburg, I'm an assistant men's basketball coach. What we have here is the Uptown Madness. It's basically a kick off for the men's and women's basketball seasons. We just started practice not too long ago. We're going to be kicking off our games here in November. And what we want to do, we just want to want to kind of, you know, collab with the community and with the students and everything, and trying to have a fun night and just kind of interact with the students as we're doing this, just kind of create some fun atmosphere so that hopefully we get some momentum going into the season.
Haley
My name is Haley Fears, and my major is economics.
James Loy
You're on the cheer team, correct?
Haley
Yes, I am.
James Loy
What is your role in this year team?
Haley
I am a base.
James Loy
What does that mean?
Haley
I lift girls up in the air, and they do a bunch of cool stuff, and then I catch them. Yeah!
James Loy
Explain to me what's going on here tonight.
Haley
It was the girls and boys basketball team, and they played a bunch of fun games against each other, like a dunk contest, a three point contest, and then at the very end, there was a chance for students to win $1,000 by making one shot, which I thought was really cool and inclusive.
Landon Marini
I'm Landon Marini. I'm a kinesiology major. We were trying to shoot for $1,000 make a three pointer. Yeah, my favorite part was probably seeing how bad some of the people were shooting.
James Loy
Now, to be clear, that's your-- that wasn't the Miami team. That was just a student, correct?
Landon Marini
It was just the students, not the actual Division One players. No.
Carl Richburg
Homecoming weekend, because we know we're going to have all you know, I'm an alum. It's a fun time to be a RedHawk, you know, a Miami University grad, especially, but it's just a fun time to be on campus and just enjoy, enjoy each other out here in Oxford. When I will look around, I see, you know, other graduates that have came here, you know, especially this weekend, you know, hanging out with their with their sons, daughters, whatever, who are now current students. That means a lot. That means, obviously, they had a great time here, such like, like I did, and they want their, you know, their young ones. To have a fun--fun experience, too.
