Disability Benefits

Scope:  Who is Covered by this Policy?                

Faculty and Staff


The University provides several types of leaves of absence to employees who are unable to work due to disability, illness, or medical condition. These include the policies titled “Sick Leave”, “Family and Medical Leave”, and “Personal Leave”.

Employees may also be entitled to disability benefits if they are unable to work due to disability. These benefits include:

  1. University-provided long-term disability insurance; and
  2. State Teachers Retirement System (STRS) or the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS) disability retirement benefits (note that the Alternative Retirement Plan [ARP] does not provide disability benefits); and
  3. Workers’ Compensation for a covered injury or occupational disease.

All disability benefits are subject to the qualifications and terms of the relevant plan.
