Matt Fitzwater is from Greenville, Ohio, and is a 1998 graduate of Miami University where he majored in History and Political Science. He graduated summa cum laude, with honors, and was Phi Beta Kappa. Matt went on to attend The Ohio State University College of Law, where he graduated in 2001 and was in the Order of the Coif. Following graduation from law school, he worked at the law firm Sullivan & Cromwell in New York City for over 12 years, where he was Special Counsel and represented a variety of clients, including large financial institutions, in white collar and regulatory matters. Matt joined Barclays in 2014 in New York as the Americas Head of Litigation and then moved to Barclays’ office in London, where he held a number of roles in the Legal function, including Global Head of Litigation and Group Centre General Counsel. In 2024, Matt became Barclays’ Global Chief Compliance Officer, overseeing a team of 1600 Compliance professionals around the globe and reporting directly to the CEO. Matt met his wife of 24 years at Ohio State, where they were both law students. He lives in Highgate in London with his wife and 3 children (Max, Violet and Eliza). He remains a rabid Reds, Bengals, and Cavaliers fan despite the time zone differences and always supports his RedHawks.
