Biography
Thomas Flynn is a Ph.D. candidate in Music Education at the University of Michigan, where he is completing his dissertation studying trends in music course offerings. At Michigan, he taught music education courses and served as assistant conductor of the Michigan Youth Symphonic Band while completing a cognate in wind conducting. His research interests include school music offerings and enrollment, musical creativity in school contexts, and the measurement of demographic characteristics. Thomas has presented his research at the AERA and NAfME national conferences. He is a contributing author to the book Elementary and Middle School Band with a Focus on Musicianship (Conway Publications).
Thomas previously taught music for nine years in the public schools of Florida and Illinois and has presented clinics at the music education conferences of both states. From 2016 to 2021, he was a member of the band faculty at the nationally recognized LaVilla School of the Arts in Jacksonville, Florida. Thomas has been recognized as an Emerging Leader by the Florida Music Education Association and awarded the Citation of Excellence by the National Band Association. He earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from Illinois State University and a master’s degree in music education from Northwestern University.
