Research Bio
Chi-Hao Cheng. Ph.D. is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Miami University. He teaches courses in electrical engineering, supervises graduate student theses, and directs undergraduate student projects. He also developed several undergraduate and graduate courses, including Digital Signal Processing, Digital Image Processing, Elements of Robotics, Real-Time Digital Signal Processing, and Advanced Digital Signal Processing.
His primary research interests focus on signal processing algorithm development and its applications in various areas, such as wideband receivers and optical communications systems. Since joining Miami in 2004, he has authored or co-authored more than 50 peer-reviewed journal and conference articles and co-authored two books with the late Dr. James Tsui. He currently serves as an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems and an editor for River Publishers’ Series of Signal, Image and Speech Processing.
Professor Cheng's research has been supported by external grants from organizations including the Air Force Research Laboratory, Dayton Area Graduate Studies Institute, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, National Science Foundation, and Office of Naval Research, as well as from industry partners like Mathworks, Texas Instruments, and Xilinx.
Prior to joining the faculty, he spent five years in the optical communications industry, where he developed cutting-edge devices such as chromatic dispersion compensators, wavelength interleavers, and dynamic gain equalizers. His work resulted in three issued U.S. patents and four pending U.S. patents.
