Biography
Cheryl Shimmin has over 40 years of progressive leadership in acute and senior living healthcare food and nutrition operations, with 38 yrs at Kettering Health Network. Before retiring, she held the position of Culinary and Nutrition Care Executive Director for 11 years. Known for her caring leadership style, her ability to transform operations in ever-changing environments and build well-organized teams, Cheryl successfully optimized clinical and foodservice systems at 9 acute hospitals, a behavior health facility, and a senior living facility, resulting in higher patient/residential satisfaction and employee engagement. Her commitment to professional development also led to mentorship initiatives, empowering future leaders in healthcare food and nutrition management.
With a career devoted to elevating the healthcare foodservice image, Cheryl fostered interdisciplinary collaboration to create high-quality, customer-centered concepts, including a patient room service program and on-trend retail venues. Kettering Health foodservice has been commended by the community, Facebook Dayton Foodies, as well as professional journals. One concept, Bistro of Hope, a café offering nutrient-rich foods to support oncology patients and their families, was featured in FoodService Director Magazine and highlighted by the Association of Hospital Foodservice (AHF).
Cheryl’s guiding light has always been her commitment to make a meaningful impact on those she serves. Her passion for service is evident through her active participation in professional panels and organizations that shape the future of healthcare foodservice. She has participated in panels for the Association for Healthcare Foodservice (AHF) and Dayton Dietetic Association. Her professional service includes: IFMA The Food Away From Home Association Healthcare Council member; Premier Inc. Foodservice Committee chairperson and member; Association of Hospital Foodservice Member; Dayton Dietetics President; University of Dayton Dietetics Program Board Member; and Miami University College of Health and Society Advisory Council member.
Over her career, Cheryl has been the recipient of multiple awards, including Ohio Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Member Merit Award, AHF Partner Leadership Award, and Premier Inc. Illuminating Excellence Award. The highlight of her tenure was receiving IFMA’s Silver Plate Award for Healthcare in 2022 – an award recognizing professionals who have demonstrated extraordinary foodservice leadership and noteworthy achievement and have made lasting contributions to the advancement of the industry.
