Travel Background
I caught the travel bug in middle school during a summer exchange to Costa Rica. I came home feeling that I had missed so much because I didn’t know the language. This spurred me to study Spanish throughout high school and in college. My desire to improve my Spanish has led me to Spain, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Colombia, and Chile.
While in college, I studied in Luxembourg at Miami’s MUDEC campus fall semester of my junior year. I immersed myself in the experience by playing in the community band with my host dad and going to Greek dancing with my host mom. While in Luxembourg, I learned not to be afraid to try new things even when I didn’t speak the language.
From Luxembourg, I traveled to Seville, Spain to study spring semester. I discovered that I really enjoyed exploring a country where I could speak the language. My first job, after graduating from Miami, was working in Costa Rica, coordinating tropical ecology programs for a local educational institution. This set my path to work in international education, helping American students to study abroad. I continue to explore new destinations and develop new partnerships around the globe.
Travel Tips
Get off the beaten path. Ask a local what they recommend to do and see in their town to experience everyday life. My favorite part of a recent visit to Sweden was finding a local café each day to stop and have “fika” –the Swedish coffee break to relax and connect with others during the workday.
Get lost. What’s the worst that can happen when you travel? Being lost is when the adventure begins. You’ll find that the world is full of kind people. When you stop to ask for directions, you may end up with a personal escort to walk you to where you want to go. Live in the moment and enjoy discovering the unexpected.
