Biography
Kayla Becker is a citizen of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma and was born and raised in her ancestral homeland along the Waapaahšiki Siipiiwi ‘Wabash River’ in Huntington, Indiana. Kayla is a proud Jingle Dress dancer and crafter, activities that have deepened her connection to her cultural roots. She and her husband, Joe Becker, are the parents of five children: Keira, Faith, Joey, Tommy, and Henry.
As a non-traditional student, Kayla returned to college with a desire to explore ways to teach her children about their Myaamia culture and language. She entered the Myaamia Heritage Program in 2021 and graduated in 2024 with a degree in Computer Science and Engineering at Miami University. Realizing a need for digital resources to support these efforts, she chose to study computer science, with the goal of using technology to help preserve and revitalize tribal traditions.
In her role at the Myaamia Center, Kayla works to develop and improve digital resources that support the Myaamia community’s cultural and language revitalization efforts. She is excited to contribute to a cause that is deeply meaningful to her and is thrilled to have the opportunity to blend her passion for technology with her commitment to her heritage. For Kayla, this role represents a dream come true—allowing her to practice and share her culture while helping others connect and grow in meaningful ways.
