Why Miami University?
I chose Miami University because it offered the flexibility I needed as a commuter student, while also giving me access to a strong education and several resources. I enjoyed the smaller class sizes and the affordability.
How did you choose your major?
I originally earned an associate’s degree in Psychology, but when I started thinking more seriously about becoming a therapist, my mom’s therapist recommended that I look into a bachelor’s degree in Social Work. After researching the field and taking a class, I realized Social Work aligned perfectly with what I wanted, a flexible, person-centered path where I could truly make an impact. It offered more opportunities to help people directly, and it felt like the right fit for my long-term goals.
How have any faculty, staff, or mentors at the University played a significant role in your journey?
While I haven’t had one standout mentor, I’ve had supportive moments with different professors and faculty who encouraged me to keep going.
Other Notable Experience
Transferring to Miami and maintaining a 4.0 GPA has been a huge milestone for me. I’ve balanced working multiple jobs and commuting. Getting recognized through Phi Alpha and the President’s List has felt special and makes all the hard work worth it.
Advice to Prospective Students
Don’t stress yourself out trying to be perfect. Take things one step at a time and give yourself credit for your small wins. Showing up, doing your best, or just surviving a hard week is what really counts. Everyone is figuring it out as they go!
How has your involvement on campus shaped you as a leader and/or prepared you for your career?
My involvement on campus has helped me connect with other students who are equally passionate about helping others. It’s made me feel more confident in my voice and more prepared for the responsibilities that come with becoming a future licensed clinical social worker.
