Mentor: Kimberly Hamlin, Ph.D.
This project explores the activism of Dr. KatherineB ushnell, a medical doctor, Woman’s Christian Temperance Union leader, and anti-prostitution advocate, from the 1890s until the 1930s While historians have noted her temperance activism and theological writings, few have analyzed how her anti-prostitution campaigns in China, India, and the U.S.challenged racial and gender norms. Even fewer have examined her shift from anti-trafficking to anti-birth control activism. To address this gap, I conducted extensive archival research, using letters, pamphlets, meeting minutes, and other primary sources to trace the evolution of her activism and its modern relevance
