A88 - Robotizing Altruism: AI in Healthcare
Mentor: Oana Godeanu-Kenworthy, Ph.D.
Since the genesis of AI being implemented into healthcare, AI was intended to reshape and standardize the healthcare system. While AI does promise efficient care through automating administrative tasks and data analysis, it can depersonalize the relationship between a patient and a provider through the over-reliance. Additionally, algorithmic bias and data generalization are risks in AI that can be detrimental in patient diagnosis. My article proposes a thorough implementation of regulated human oversight protocols over the healthcare systems with AI technology. Human oversight serves as the accountability for the technology and allows providers to question the data being produced. With this implementation in all hospitals, AI will be monitored properly and further perfect AI as a tool. The benefits include improved accuracy, reducing healthcare costs, equitable care, and increased convenience for healthcare providers. Culturally, AI is treated as something that can solve humanitarian issues especially in healthcare. However, human intuition and empathy are driving forces for determining a patient’s needs or realistic scaling efforts. It is important to implement AI as a supportive tool in healthcare which is why human oversight protocols are important to have.
