C65 - Does third-person self-talk facilitate emotion regulation without engaging cognitive control?

Mentor(s): Darwin Guevarra, Ph.D.

This research explored whether talking to yourself in the third person—using your own name instead of "I"—can help with self-control. The idea is that this way of talking creates psychological distance, making it easier to manage emotions (Moser et. al, 2017).

In two studies, participants dealt with negative emotions while either using “I” or their own name to reflect on their feelings. In the first study, they viewed upsetting images, and in the second, they recalled painful personal memories. Brain activity was measured in both cases (Moser et. al, 2017).
