B37 - Exploring the Authorship of the Historia Augusta Using Computational Stylometry

Mentor: Steven Tuck, Ph.D.

The Historia Augusta is the title given to an anonymous collection of biographies of the 30 Roman emperors who ruled from 117 to 284 CE. The Historia Augusta is the principal Latin source for a century of Roman history. Although the biographies have the names of six authors assigned to them, it is clear that the names are pseudonyms. This research project aimed to assess whether several potential contemporary writers could be tested using sylometry techniques to compare their writing styles and grammatical choices with those of the Historia Augusta. While our results were inconclusive, we have concluded that our methodology reflects existing data in the field.
