C68 - Sensory Integration Therapy in Pediatric Autism and Trauma Care
Mentor: Carolyn Craig
This project examines the role of sensory integration therapy (SIT) in supporting children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and trauma-related conditions. Sensory processing differences are highly prevalent in these populations and can significantly impact all aspects of development.
This review synthesizes findings from existing research to evaluate the effectiveness of SIT and similar sensory-based interventions. The findings suggest that while sensory integration approaches can produce immediate improvements in engagement, self-regulation, and behavior, the overall evidence base remains inconsistent due to variations in methodology and intervention design. Additionally, sensory-based interventions show promise in pediatric trauma-informed care.
