Winter Term Lean Fair

The Miami University Lean Initiatives office will offer a Winter Term Lean Fair for Miami University employees on January 16, 2015 at the Farmer School of Business. Participants will have an opportunity to attend one of three sessions to learn more about Miami University’s continuous improvement initiatives and Lean concepts and tools. The morning session will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. with registration beginning at 8 a.m. The afternoon session will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. with registration beginning at 12:30 p.m. A drop in session for walk-by viewing will be available during the lunch hours from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Fair will kick off with a brief welcome from Dr. Creamer followed by an introduction to the program by Chris Pirigyi and a short history of Lean by Al Ryan. The fair will be a multi-divisional event with representatives from Finance and Business Services, Enrollment Management and Student Success, University Advancement, Information Technology Services, and Academic Affairs. Attendees will participate in a variety of courses and activities. Participants can network with Lean team leaders, view completed Miami Lean projects and get hands-on experience with applying Lean in their own daily work routines.

There will be both core classes (Myth Busters, DIY, Submit a Lean Idea, Safety and Sustainability) and ongoing open classes (Agile, Lean infomercials and project displays) for participants to choose from to expand their knowledge of lean and continuous improvement. During the Myth Busters course, HDRBS will be busting Lean myths such as how Lean is only used in manufacturing or that ideas only come from top administrators. The sustainability session will invite participants to “green their ride” by analyzing how much of an employee’s take-home pay is being spent to travel to and from work. Also, stop in and take the all-employee “voice of the customer” survey at the sustainability session. During the “Submit a Lean Idea” session, participants will learn how to share their ideas for improving the University. Finally, several open sessions will be available that emphasize past, present and future Lean projects across the University.

Coffee and cookies will be provided at the end of each 3 hour session and Dividends will be open for participants to purchase additional items. There will be prizes awarded for the best safety idea and green cars on display. This will be one of the more valuable university events of the year. Please work with your supervisors and department heads to receive authorization to attend either the morning or afternoon session. The kickoff event for each session will be held in the Taylor Auditorium. Be sure to bring your Miami ID to the event.
