New faculty joins MJF

Our department welcomed three new tenure-track faculty members and two visiting faculty members this fall.

Andy RiceD. Andy Rice is an assistant professor in film studies and contemporary media studies who has his doctorate degree in communication from the University of California in San Diego. He is a media theorist and a non-fiction filmmaker.

Andrew PeckAndrew Peck is an assistant professor in strategic communication. He has a doctorate degree in communication arts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Peck is a media scholar and ethnographer whose research focuses on how digital media offer new possibilities for persuasion and everyday communication.

Adam RottinghausAdam Rottinghaus is an assistant professor teaching strategic communication. Rottinghaus has a doctorate in communication studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a critical, media, and cultural studies scholar who researches strategic communications and emerging technologies that blur business and consumer cultures.

Kelly SchellhouseKelly Schellhouse who teaches public speaking, earned a master of arts degree in Organization Communications, as well as a master of education degree from Xavier University in Human Resource Development. Before teaching at Miami, she taught as an adjunct professor at various Ohio universities, as well as working in the training and development field for more than 12 years.

Brian JohnstonBrian Johnston who teaches strategic communication, earned his doctorate degree in communication from the University of Southern Florida. Previously, he served as a course director at Indiana State University where he spearheaded a push for open education elements in traditional universities.

In the Journalism Program, Patti Newberry has two new titles. A member of the journalism faculty since 1997 and a senior lecturer since 2011, she is now area director of journalism. Off campus, Patti continued her engagement in the Society of Professional Journalists, the nation's largest journalism advocacy group. She was elected secretary-treasurer of the national board in September, with a goal of becoming president-elect next fall and president after that.

To mark National Coast Guard Day on Aug. 4, KBCS radio in Bellevue, WA aired 'Homefront Heroines: Voices of Coast Guard SPARS (Part One)'- an audio documentary series produced by JRN Senior Clinical Professor Joe Sampson.

Visiting JRN instructor Fred Reeder Jr. was named the new business adviser for all Miami student media organization. Reeder is a 1993 graduate from Miami. He has a master’s degree University of Cincinnati in 2000.

Shara Clark, a visiting instructor in STC, won an Award of Excellence at the Cincinnati PRSA Blacksmith Awards for an annual report for United Way. Her Bateman Content Team also won a Blacksmith Award for Take Five Miami through Cincinnati PRSA as well. Clark also is currently serving as community services director for Cincinnati PRSA. And she was accepted into Miami University's Project Dragonfly Advanced Inquiry Program to work toward a master's degree.
