The Department of Architecture + Interior Design offers the undergraduate Bachelor of Arts in Architecture leading to the professional Master of Architecture, in addition to an undergraduate professional Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design. All three degrees are part of an arts cluster within the School of Creative Arts and provide rigorous professional education within the context of a selective, mid-size liberal arts university.
Majors and minors in the Department of Architecture + interior Design emphasize strong professional preparation grounded in rigorous, comprehensive liberal learning. Small class sizes, an emphasis on independent student research, numerous opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration, and an impressive level of student participation in off-campus study augment and strengthen the academic programs.
Admission to the Department of Architecture + Interior Design is competitive and is based on submission of the creative portfolio in addition to academic credentials. The department seeks students with a wide diversity of backgrounds, races, and interests. The study of Architecture and Interior Design flourishes in a social setting in which differences can be understood and valued as strengths.
Facilities in support of our programs in Architecture and Interior Design are largely contained within Alumni Hall. These include approximately 300 dedicated studio workstations, each equipped with wireless internet in support of our requirement for student-owned laptops; a separate 24-hour computer lab; classroom and studio break-out space; the Wertz Art and Architecture Library; a materials library; a shop to support woodworking and metal welding; a digital fabrication lab, including a large format router, laser-cutter, and 3D printer; a large format plotting facility; and a Visual Resources Library (Hiestand Hall).
