Office of Institutional Research
The Office of Institutional Research (OIR) at Miami University supports the university's planning and decision-making processes through the analysis and dissemination of information about students, faculty, and finances.
External Reporting: OIR is responsible for standard reporting to the federal government (IPEDS surveys), the state government (HEI reporting), the NCAA (athlete graduation rates), publishing companies (US News and other college guidebooks), and others.
Internal Reporting: OIR is responsible for compiling an annual Fact Book, supporting Academic Program Review, and creating many other periodic reports. We also complete numerous ad hoc reports.
Miami University 2020 Plan
The Miami 2020 Plan is a university-wide effort to offer "the best undergraduate experience in the nation, enhanced by superior, select graduate programs." Both academic and non-academic departments, programs, and divisions will be contributing to the goals outlined in the 2020 Plan. To assist faculty, staff, and administrators in contributing to the 2020 Plan goals, the Office of Institutional Research provides resources for departments, programs, divisions, and Vice Presidents.
Frequently Requested Data
The Common Data Set (CDS), the Fact Book, and the Fact Sheets provide many commonly requested pieces of institutional data. The Office of Institutional Research also provides data collected through a variety of student, faculty, and staff surveys. Although there is some overlap in the data provided by each of these sources, each source provides unique information.
- Common Data Set (CDS): The Common Data Set uses standard definitions to provide data for college guidebooks. These standard definitions, which are used by colleges across the U.S., allow comparisons between schools. The CDS contains information about the Oxford campus only.
- Fact Book: The Fact Book is a detailed compilation of data produced by the Office of Institutional Research. Because it does not need to adhere to the CDS standards, the Fact Book provides information that is not available in the CDS. The Fact Book contains information about all Miami campuses.
- Fact Sheets: Fact Sheets are brief, one-page summaries of general information about Miami University. Fact Sheets are useful when you are looking for quick pieces of information (e.g., overall enrollment, most recent retention rate) rather than detailed information. Fact Sheets include information about all Miami campuses.
- Institutional Surveys: The Office of Institutional Research collects data from a variety of student, faculty and staff surveys. In addition, OIR staff can provide random samples of students, faculty or staff for individuals who are conducting research or assessment at Miami University.
