Miami University Symphony Orchestra May 5 concert features Concerto Competition winners
The Miami University Symphony Orchestra, directed by Ricardo Averbach, presents a special concert featuring the top three winners of Miami’s 2023 Concerto Competition at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 5, in Hall Auditorium. The concert is free.
The program includes:
- Matt Silva de Souza, a master’s in Music Performance graduate student from Brazil, who will perform Mozart’s 2nd Horn Concerto.
- Franklin Sandoval, a master’s in Music Performance graduate student, who will perform Schumann’s Cello Concerto. Sandoval is a two-time winner of the University of North Florida’s Concerto Competition, his alma mater.
- Alec Reder, a junior Music Education major, who will perform “Fantasia for Alto Saxophone” by Claude Smith.
This year, in celebration of the 120th anniversary of the Miami Orchestra program, the Department of Music created a Composition Competition for Miami students. Ezra Simmons, a sophomore Flute Performance and Music Composition double major, won with his composition “Daydreams from the Countryside.”
Simmons’ composition will be premiered by the MUSO.
