Miami University Symphony Orchestra presents “Symphonic Fireworks” concert ahead of Thanksgiving

The Miami University Symphony Orchestra (MUSO) is thrilled to announce its upcoming concert, Symphonic Fireworks, on Monday, November 25, 2024, at 7:30 p.m. in Hall Auditorium. This dynamic event will feature a blend of classical masterpieces, a world premiere, and seasonal favorites to spark the holiday spirit.

The concert will open with Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, Op. 96, conducted by senior Ezra Simmons, a past winner of the Miami University Composition Competition. Simmons brings a fresh perspective to Shostakovich’s jubilant work, setting the stage for a powerful evening.

Continuing the program is Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 “Unfinished”, a beloved work known for its lyrical beauty. The performance will also feature the world premiere of Professor Phillip Roberts’ Hocket Rocket, a cutting-edge piece dedicated to MUSO and Ricardo Averbach. This inventive composition merges medieval hocket techniques with funk rock grooves, inspired by George Clinton and Funkadelic, creating a whirlwind of rhythmic intensity.

Adding to the excitement, two of Miami University’s prestigious a cappella groups, The Misfitz and Open Fifth, will join MUSO as special guests. The Misfitz, a celebrated female ensemble, and Open Fifth, a renowned male group, will bring their unique harmonies, enhancing the concert with a memorable collaboration of voices and instruments. Their presence promises to infuse the evening with special energy, making it a truly unforgettable experience of fun and music.

The program will continue with Wagner’s grand Overture to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, celebrating art and community, followed by Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture, a spirited work symbolizing unity. To end the evening on a festive note, MUSO will perform Leroy Anderson’s lively Sleigh Ride as a joyful lead-up to the Christmas season.

Join us for Symphonic Fireworks—a night of vibrant energy, timeless classics, innovative music, and unique collaborations that will spark the holiday spirit. This concert is free and open to the public; no tickets are necessary.
