Miami senior Reilly Powers has been elected NAEA Preservice Division Director-Elect for the National Arts Education Association (NAEA), making history as the first Miami student to serve in this role.

NAEA, the largest professional organization for art educators and students, offers tremendous honor and growth within the industry. Powers first became involved with the association as the Western Region Student Representative and has also served as the Miami University NAEA President.

Powers was originally nominated for the Preservice Division Director-Elect position over a year ago and underwent a rigorous selection process, including submitting her application, participating in an election, and declaring her candidacy. Her new role supports undergraduate and graduate students in art education. From reviewing resumes and conducting interviews to putting on programming events and workshops, Powers is excited to take on this new adventure.

“I never fear rejection,” Powers said. “It’s about doing something big for myself while making an impact on other people.”

Powers credits much of her success to Miami University Associate Professor Stephanie Danker, Ph.D., who encouraged her to get involved with NAEA. “I owe a lot to her as a professor and a person. Miami gave me the space and tools to grow my skills,” Powers explained.

As she prepares for graduation, Powers will balance her new NAEA responsibilities while entering her first year of teaching. She hopes to stay in Ohio and eventually pursue a master's degree. No matter where the future takes her, Powers is eager to inspire and lead others through art.
