Kappa Kappa Psi enhances student resources with Presser Hall project

The freshly painted blue shelf, without lettering or decoration, is drying outdoors on a tarp near a wooded area. The Membership Candidates of the Kappa Kappa Psi Honors Band Fraternity, Beta Rho class, have completed their 2025 service project: the installation of a music library shelf in Presser Hall. The shelf is located in the basement between the vending machines and is now available for student use.

This project was initiated in response to the relocation of the Amos Library from the Center for Performing Arts to King Library. The move resulted in reduced access to music materials for students in the music buildings, and a portion of the Amos Library’s collection was auctioned off due to limited space. Faculty members have since purchased some of these materials and made them available to students free of charge at Presser Hall. However, without a designated storage space, these items were previously placed informally in the lobby, creating clutter and making materials difficult to find.

The new shelf addresses this issue by providing organized storage for free music resources, including sheet music sorted by instrument category and educational books. The system also incorporates guidelines for use:

Four students smile while posing next to the blue music library shelf as they begin the decorative painting process.

  • Give to Take: Students are encouraged to donate their own music before taking available items.
  • Take Items: Free materials are available without requiring a return.
  • Returnable Items: Borrowed items can be signed out using a provided log and are expected to be returned.

In addition to music materials, the shelf also offers emergency instrument care supplies such as valve oil, rosin, slide cream, and cork grease. Basic classroom materials like staff paper, paper clips, and pencils are also available for student use.

Hala Muhammad, a member of the Beta Rho class, shared the following quote in connection with the project:

“From what we get, we can make a living; what we give, however, makes a life.” – Arthur Ashe.

This project continues Kappa Kappa Psi’s tradition of service, following last year’s installation of a microwave shelf in the Center for Performing Arts.

The nearly assembled white wooden shelf stands upright in a garage, with tools and supplies nearby.

The completed shelf, now painted bright blue with decorative white and dark blue flowers, features the Greek letters Kappa Kappa Psi and the words Beta Rho on the back panel.
