Miami’s Siok Lian Tan named MTNA Foundation Fellow
Professor of Piano honored during 2026 national conference
Siok Lian Tan, professor of Piano at Miami University, was named a Music Teacher National Association (MTNA) Foundation Fellow during the 2026 MTNA National Conference held in Chicago March 21-25.
The MTNA Foundation Fellow honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to music teaching. Individuals earn the award when a peer or group of peers donates $1,500 to the MTNA Foundation Fund in an individual’s name.
Tan teaches piano performance, piano pedagogy, chamber music, and class piano.
As a performer, Tan has appeared as a soloist with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Oxford Chamber Orchestra, and the Miami University Symphony Orchestra. She has also been featured in live broadcasts on Cincinnati Public Radio WGUC and has presented solo and chamber music recitals in major cities worldwide, including New York, London, Chicago, Luxembourg, Cape Town, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Melbourne, and Cologne. She’s also performed a solo recital at London’s renowned St. Martin-in-the-Fields concert series. Tan’s recording of chamber music by James Lentini is available on the Naxos label.
Tan has also presented at prestigious music conferences such as the College Music Society National Conference, the National Group Piano and Piano Pedagogy Forum, the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy, and the Music Teachers National Association National Conference. She’s published articles in Piano Pedagogy Forum, American Music Teacher, MTNA eJournal, and Clavier Companion, and she’s served on the editorial board of American Music Teacher and as East Central Division Chair of the MTNA Certification Commission.
Tan received the 2011 Ohio Music Teachers Association Teacher of the Year Award, the 2020 Miami University Crossan Hays Curry Distinguished Educator Award, and the 2023 American Music Teacher Article of the Year Award.
