Out of all the universities you looked at, what made you ultimately choose Miami?
The campus. I drove through several universities with my dad, but I knew Miami was the right place for me after looking around the campus. I love the brick buildings and all of the nature trails. It felt so similar to home and like a place I would be comfortable in during such a large transition in my life.
How did you choose your major(s)?
I started at Miami as a nursing major, but quickly shifted to ETBD after hearing about the kinds of classes my friend was taking. The Arts Management co-major was suggested to me by my advisor, Tracey Hayes, and it felt like the perfect fit for what I wanted out of my education.
Tell us about any special experiential learning opportunities that have influenced you in a positive way.
Earlier in my time at Miami, I studied abroad in Luxembourg as part of the Leading Digital Innovation Minor, where I was a marketing intern. Through this experience, I realized just how much I am capable of. Previously, endeavors like this seemed impossible, but now I feel confident I can find success in almost any environment. Now, I am pursuing an honors research project where I am hosting an art gallery to represent local marginalized artists. It has helped better connect me with my community, the arts, and build stronger relationships with my professors along the way, specifcally Dr. Youngaah Koh, who has been my advisor for the project.
As a Miami student, what are some of your awards and accomplishments? Are you a student leader? Tell us about that and what roles you have played in the Miami community.
I consistently make the President’s List, but outside my grade-based achievements, I am involved on campus in several ways. Starting as an Arts Management intern at the Richard and Carole Cocks Art Museum, I assisted with upkeeping their marketing endeavors and advocating for the importance of all museums on campus through blog posts. Since my efforts were appreciated so much, they hired me as a student assistant to continue my work. Additionally, I am Co-Chair of Sparkfest, leading a team of students with my other Co-Chair, Jack Drayer, to orchestrate one of the largest arts programs at Miami. On a more general level, I have also volunteered at the Willard Sherman Turrell Herbarium to assist in collection management.
What are your plans after you graduate from Miami? What is your dream job?
After graduation, I hope to be in a museum in any capacity. I find the environment to be extremely inspiring, and I hope to be surrounded by passionate individuals who encourage me to learn and love the world around me. I have experience in marketing and design, so I'd love to apply these skills to making the arts more accessible.
Is there anything else you'd like to share about your Miami experience that we didn't cover?
I would like to bring attention to some professors in the College of Creative Arts. I have never been a student who is super outspoken, but through the encouragement from the faculty, I have learned to put myself out there for others to see. Even farther than the classroom, so many of the people in charge of running the arts are so passionate about what they do, and that mindset has really influenced me to put my best work out for what I care about.
