Research Bio

Dr. Muhammad Jahan joined Miami University in 2016 after serving 4 years at Western Kentucky University (WKU) as a tenure-track Assistant Professor.

Prior to joining WKU, he completed his postdoc in the department of Mechanical Engineering at University of Arkansas in 2012.

Dr. Jahan received his BS and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2004 and 2010 respectively.

Dr. Jahan also worked in Makino Asia Pte Ltd, a well-known manufacturer of CNC machine tools, for about a year before returning to academia as postdoc.

Dr. Jahan’s research interests are in the areas of advanced manufacturing processes including both conventional and non-conventional manufacturing processes, micro- and nano-machining, and hybrid machining processes. He is interested in the surface integrity, microstructure and mechanical properties of the engineering materials after machined by various manufacturing processes. His research also explores the machinability of newer and difficult-to-cut materials using different conventional and non-conventional manufacturing processes.

He is currently working on the research projects focusing on surface integrity, mechanical properties, and biocompatibility of difficult-to-cut materials after machined by conventional and non-conventional machining processes.

Dr. Jahan’s research has been supported by National Science Foundation (NSF), NSF-KY EPSCoR, WKU Research Foundation, M K Morse Company, Bullen Ultrasounds, and Miami University.

Dr. Jahan has received several internal and external grants at WKU and Miami University and received over $1M support from external and internal agencies as PI and co-PI.

Prior to WKU, he completed his postdoc in the department of Mechanical Engineering at University of Arkansas in 2012.

Dr. Jahan received his BS and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2004 and 2010 respectively. Dr. Jahan has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles in refereed journals and proceedings of international conferences, and contributed 18 chapters to books from reputed publishers including Elsevier, Springer and John Wiley.

He also edited 2 books on his research area of electrical discharge machining (EDM) at macro and micro scales. He received numerous research awards including four best paper awards: Best Paper Award - ICAMT 2016, Best Paper Award - ATMAE 2014, Outstanding Paper Award - NAMRC 2012, A.M. Stickland Best Paper Award - JEM 2010, and two Most Downloaded Papers from Elsevier.

He has received the “Most Prolific Proposer” and “Junior Investigator Award” at his previous institute, Western Kentucky University.

Dr. Jahan is an active member of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME).

He is serving both ASME and SME conferences at different capacities including session chair, symposium organizer, scientific committee member, topic chair, and track co-chair.
