MUDEC English Language Learner Summer Camp
Overview
The MUDEC English Language Learner (ELL) Summer Camp gives Miami University students hands-on experience in planning, developing, and delivering curriculum for English language learners while being immersed in a cross-cultural educational environment. It is a non-credit study abroad course offered in partnership with MUDEC, the International School of Differdange and Esch-sur-Alzette (EIDE), and the Luxembourgish government.
Program Details
The camp consists of two one-week sessions in Luxembourg during the middle two weeks of July. One week is designed for primary school students and the other for middle school students. Each week lasts five days and features a theme, such as The American Experience, with projects and activities led by Miami students.
On Friday afternoons, students present their work to families and the Differdange community in a culminating event that celebrates what they have learned. Before the camp begins, Miami students participate in a cultural orientation and tour of Luxembourg City. Between the two camps, students take part in a culturally enriching day trip to a neighboring country, such as France or Germany. Each week includes a family barbecue hosted by MUDEC to facilitate connection with the campers' families.
Learning Outcomes and Student Impact
Miami students who participate in this camp develop:
- Effective strategies for teaching students whose first language is not English
- A broader worldview, cultural competence, self-confidence, and relationship-building skills
- Firsthand experience in curriculum design and classroom leadership in a multilingual, international educational context
Collaboration and Partners
This camp is made possible through the collaboration of:
- Miami University
- The International School of Differdange and Esch-sur-Alzette (EIDE)
- Miami University Dolibois European Center (MUDEC)
- The Luxembourgish government
Why This Matters
Participating in this type of immersive, theme-based, learner-centered camp helps Miami students understand cultural difference, educational diversity, and expand their capacity to design culturally responsive curricula. It also provides valuable experience for future educators working with multilingual learners in any setting.
