Miami faculty and students to present esports performance research at Midwest symposium

A team of Miami University sport psychology researchers, led by Visiting Assistant Professor Jordan Goffena, will present their findings on mental performance in esports at the 2025 Midwest Sport and Exercise Psychology Symposium, held March 13–15 at the University of Kentucky.

Goffena and sport leadership and management graduate students Kiersten Grumbos, Gabrielle Grumbos, Eli Obrist, and Abby Wolf will share a series of presentations examining esports athletes' perceptions of performance, coaches' perspectives on mental training, and applied strategies for performance consulting in competitive gaming. Their work builds on ongoing research into how traditional sport psychology techniques—such as attentional control, energy management, and teamwork—can enhance performance in esports.

The research stems from Miami’s collaboration with its varsity esports program, the first of its kind at the Division I level. The team’s findings contribute to a growing field exploring the psychological demands of esports and ways to optimize competitive gaming performance.
