EHS alum Karman Meyer turns passion for nutrition and sleep into national platform

Karman Meyer, a 2009 Miami University graduate in dietetics, has transformed a deep passion for health into a thriving business and a national PBS special. As the founder of Meyer Nutrition Communications, Meyer educates organizations and communities about culinary medicine and the essential connection between nutrition and sleep.

After 15 years working as a registered dietitian, Meyer launched her own consulting and speaking business to pursue work she finds most meaningful. “I’ve always had an entrepreneurial mindset and spirit,” she said. “Starting my own venture gave me the freedom to focus on work I’m passionate about.”

Meyer’s company offers wellness programming and nutrition education events, with a growing emphasis on the link between diet and sleep quality. Her book, Eat to Sleep, published in 2019, formed the basis for a one-hour PBS special that began airing in 2023. Hosting the special was a career milestone for Meyer. “Sharing this message about the crucial link between nutrition and sleep through public media was profoundly rewarding,” she said.

Launching and managing a business as a solo entrepreneur has not come without challenges. Meyer says building a strong network of peers has been essential to staying focused and inspired. “Whether it’s fellow dietitians or people in completely different industries, those connections help me maintain focus on my main goals,” she said.

Her entrepreneurial foundation was laid during her time at Miami University. Supportive faculty and early hands-on experiences helped her see the potential in combining nutrition and media. “I was encouraged to explore beyond traditional dietetics,” Meyer said. From starting and writing a student newsletter to speaking to campus groups, these opportunities helped build her writing skills and public speaking confidence.

Meyer encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to take their time and build intentionally. “It’s okay to test the waters while working another job or launch into it right out of the gate,” she said. “Everyone’s path is different.”

Meyer's story is featured in EHS Innovates: Founders and Builders, a spotlight series from Miami University’s College of Education, Health, and Society. This new series highlights alumni who are building ventures with purpose across education, health, and society.
