Out of all the universities you looked at, what made you ultimately choose Miami?
When I first researched Miami Regionals, I chose it solely because of the price of attendance as well as how close it was to my house, however the welcoming atmosphere during orientation made me feel more comfortable about my choice. I got involved in student activities and clubs halfway through my fall semester and it really solidified the choice for me. I’ve made some of my best friends through these organizations and it’s helped me grow a sense of community and belonging.
How did you choose your major? Were you decided from the beginning, or did you discover your interests here along the way?
I chose my major because I’ve always had a drive to help people. I struggle with mental health issues and I grew up seeing how people, not just in my family, but also the community outside, struggled to get the help and resources that they needed. Social work is a major that allows me to help people in various ways, whether it’s through one-on-one counseling, welfare services, disability advocacy, or whatever else.
Tell us about any special experiential learning opportunities -- research, study abroad/away, student organizations, internships, athletics, or other things -- that have influenced you in a positive way.
I started the Social Work Club with my friend Lydia and faculty advisor Jessica Carroll. We’ve had an amazing time. We’ve been able to have consistent turnout at our weekly meetings and go volunteering! I’m also a part of GGWP and Regionals DnD and they have been a huge part of the reason I feel a sense of community on campus!
As a Miami student, what are some of your awards and accomplishments? Are you a student leader? Tell us about that and what roles you have played in the Miami community.
I recently won the Excellence in Student Leadership Award from the Miami Regional Office of Student Activities and Orientation (ROSA). I was really grateful for the award because it felt nice to be recognized for something I put so much time and effort into. I am the president of the Social Work Club and have been in charge of lots of organizational tasks, as well as things like poster design and making sure we have all the documents needed to be a club. I’m also a general officer in GGWP and Regionals DnD where I help with tasks that other officers are unable to do/finish.
What are your plans after you graduate from Miami? What sort of career are you aiming for? What is your dream job?
Wow. Seems so far away, but I'm actually graduating next year, so I should get on that. I am going to take a gap year to gain patient care hours for my physician assistant application and enjoy life post-undergrad!! Let's go healthcare!
Is there anything else you'd like to share about your Miami experience that we didn't cover?
Jessica Carroll has been an amazing club advisor and professor in general. She’s extremely kind and understanding of students’ circumstances. I am eternally grateful for the patience she’s had with me!
