HCWE Staff Welcome Donors and National Advisory Board for 2023 Meeting

Every fall, the Howe Center for Writing Excellence welcomes donors Roger and Joyce Howe, as well as members of the HCWE’s National Advisory Board (NAB), to Miami’s campus to discuss and celebrate the center’s accomplishments and initiatives. Thursday nights always include a reception and dinner, while Friday is constituted by the business meeting.

On Thursday night, board members joined the Howes, the FSB Associate Dean, and several Howe staff members for a tour of the Howe Center for Business Writing’s new space in room 2045 of the Farmer School of Business. The new space is set up to support writing consultations with both individuals and teams, and it has been outfitted with a webcam and a screen for students to record themselves practicing presentations and slideshows.

Following the tour, the Howes and National Advisory Board attended a reception in the HCWE space. Attendees included President and Renate Crawford, Provost Mullenix, and HWC consultants. Miami faculty and librarians also attended, including recent Howe Faculty Writing Fellows, Howe Award winners, and other friends of the HCWE who have made considerable contributions to the center’s efforts to innovate teaching. Displays showcased the AI resources created by faculty and library teams (available here on our website), as well as research conducted by the Writing Center consultants.

On Friday, September 15, HCWE Director Elizabeth Wardle and Writing Center Director Lizzie Hutton led the National Advisory Board through a series of  discussions about the work of the HCWE. There was a special focus on the ways the HCWE continues to address the teaching challenges and opportunities posed by AI; how to expand the work of the Faculty Fellows program; and student research initiatives.

Toward the end of the day, NAB members took a break to celebrate the kittens that librarian Carla Meyers had brought to Constitution Day.

Overall, this annual event was a celebration of innovative work and ongoing relationships across campus and across the country.
