Miami University Regionals launches new online Master of Science in Nursing program

One of Miami University Regionals most successful programs is expanding its reach to include graduate programs at both the master’s and doctoral levels.

A completely online Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree program will launch in fall 2022. The Department of Nursing plans to offer an online Doctor of Nursing Practice degree starting in fall 2024.

Full-time students can complete the MSN program in 21 months or part-time in less than three years. Brooke Flinders, chair and associate professor of Nursing, said the launch is the culmination of nearly a decade’s worth of work by her team.

“Once the nursing program shifted from a 2+2 program to a traditional four-year, BSN program in 2009, we began to explore the possibilities of creating the master’s program,” Flinders said. “The result was a program that received close to $4 million in funding through Miami University’s Boldly Creative initiative in 2019.”

The MSN features three tracks that are designed to prepare working nurses for the next step in their careers: Family Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Educator, and Nurse Executive Leadership.

MSN graduates will be eligible to continue their education in Miami’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program.

“Our DNP degree will be launched in 2024, allowing for seamless enrollment from our first cohort of MSN graduates,” Jennifer Rode, associate professor of Nursing, said. “The focus of Miami’s DNP program will be to prepare nurses for roles in organizational/systems leadership, and innovative and evidence-based approaches for increasingly complex healthcare settings.”

While the program will initially be open only to BSN applicants in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and Illinois, Flinders said there are plans to expand to other states in the future. “The contiguous nature of these states and the number of nursing alumni located within made them logical choices for us to begin offering the program.”

“Tuition is competitive, and students will benefit from minimal additional costs throughout the program,” Rode said. According to Rode, the MSN program is actively seeking accreditation through the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

“Following CCNE’s process and required timeline, on-site evaluation will take place in fall 2023, one year after the start of the program,” Rode said. “If accredited, graduates will be eligible to take the certification exam upon completion of their program.”
