Building community connections, contributing to a growing and thriving region, and adapting to changing workforce needs were at the center of Moira Casey’s remarks Wednesday night at Hamilton’s State of the City event.

Casey, interim dean of Miami University’s College of Liberal Arts and Applied Science, spoke at the annual address where she gave updates on the upcoming transformation of Miami Regionals into a polytechnic education model, the master plan for the Hamilton campus, and the Advanced Manufacturing Workforce and Innovation Hub (AM Hub).

“This has always been an event where the city delivers some of the most important developments in the Hamilton community. I’m honored they included Miami,” Casey said. “Miami University can play a big role in continuing to drive success in the city and the region.”

Transitioning to a polytechnic education model is on the horizon for Miami Regionals. Part of MiamiTHRIVE – the university’s strategic plan – the polytechnic education model blends applied learning, technical education, and industry collaboration with a strong liberal arts education focused on workplace ready skills.

Workforce development is at the heart of the polytechnic initiative.

“What we are doing in order to better serve the workforce needs of our community is to expand Miami’s academic portfolio at the regional campuses with an eye toward the high-demand fields both in the region and the state,” Casey said. “This has the potential to really support and drive Hamilton’s continued growth and development.”

That is a sentiment shared by Dan Bates, president of the Greater Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, which hosted Wednesday’s event at COhatch in Hamilton.

Bates said Miami and Butler Tech’s partnership with the AM Hub and the polytechnic education model will be “game changers” for Hamilton.

“It’s a philosophical shift that is going to have a very positive impact on the city of Hamilton and its residents,” Bates said. “There is so much happening in Hamilton. The State of the City is an opportunity to celebrate what we’ve accomplished and get people excited about the future of where we’re going.”

Casey noted the Hamilton campus has greatly expanded its footprint and is working with the architecture firm Perkins&Will to evaluate physical space to best support the AM Hub and the polytechnic education model. That includes examining the entrances and edges of the campus, as well as identifying ways to better connect its north and south cores.

“We are rethinking our educational model. We are listening to what people outside of our institution are telling us in regards to their needs – from the students who are graduating from our programs, to what training needs they have for their employees, to possibly even what physical facility needs we may be able to provide,” Casey said. “We are making sure we are providing the types of graduates the community needs to support its growth.”

Bates said “the stars have aligned” in terms of collaboration.

“We are going to learn and grow together,” Bates said. “Everybody has an important piece of the puzzle. We all win.”
