Marital quality, marital dissolution, and mortality risk during the later life course

07/25/2016

This study examines the relationship between later-life marital quality, marital dissolution, and mortality using discrete-time event history models with data from nine waves (1992–2008) of the Health and Retirement Study (n = 7388). Results show marital status is more important for men's mortality risk than women's, whereas marital quality is more important for women's survival than men's. Being widowed or divorced more than two years raises mortality risk for men, but later-life marital...

Healthy Aging in the Context of Educational Disadvantage: The Role of "Ordinary Magic"

07/20/2016

The objective of this study is to examine the correlates of healthy aging in the context of educational disadvantage and the extent to which identified correlates are shared with the wider, more educationally advantaged population. Among educationally disadvantaged adults, demographic characteristics (e.g., age), health practices (e.g., physical activity), and the presence of health conditions were independently correlated with healthy aging. With few exceptions, correlates of healthy aging were...

Gender differences in trajectories of physical activity among older Americans with diabetes

07/17/2015

The primary objective of this study was to examine gender differences in engagement in physical activity over time among older U.S. adults with diabetes. Using data from the Health and Retirement Study, we investigated physical activity between 2004 and 2010 among 1,857 adults aged 65 years and above with diabetes. The women in this cohort of older Americans started and remained less active than their male counterparts. Investigations covering a larger portion of the life course and those...

Quantitative Physical Activity of Children and Adolescents in a Rural Population from Eastern Nepal

07/16/2015

We evaluated physical activity of children and adolescents aged 6 to 18 years from the Jirel population of eastern Nepal. 399 Participants wore an Actical omnidirectional accelerometer for one week as part of their annual visit to the Jiri Growth Study. Children are more active on non-school days and adolescents are more active during the school week. Jirel children do not exhibit the reduction in physical activity that most Western populations experience during the transition from childhood to...

Generativity in elderly Oblate Sisters of Providence

10/28/2014

This paper explored how generativity and well-being merged in a group of childless older women: African and Hispanic Roman Catholic Religious Sisters, linking two minority identity characteristics. Findings highlight that research gains from a phenomenological understanding of how religious faith promotes generative cognitions and emotions. Findings also reveal that the experiences of a subculture in society—African-American elderly women religious—add to theories and definitions of...

Childless Elders in Assisted Living: Findings from the Maryland Assisted Living Study

04/10/2013

We compared data drawn from a random sample of 399 current assisted living (AL) residents and a subsample of 222 newly admitted residents for two groups: childless AL residents and AL residents with children. The percentage of childless AL residents (26%) in our study was slightly higher than US population estimates of childless persons age 65 and over (20%). In the overall sample, the two groups differed significantly by age, race and women’s years of education. The childless group was...

Disability in Ohio: Current and Future Demand for Services

04/20/2008

In an effort to project the size of Ohio’s Medicaid long-term care expenditures between now and the year 2020, this report first projected the size of the population with severe physical and/or cognitive, intellectual and/or developmental, and mental illness disabilities. Then, assuming different rates of medical and long-term care inflations the author projected both the total Medicaid and Medicaid long-term care expenditures.Full Report (PDF 582KB)Research Brief (PDF 350KB)

Profile and Projections of Ohio's 60+ Population: A State Study

05/25/2004

During the next 20 years, the national population, as well as the population in Ohio, will grow older. In anticipation of this impending change, we have created this series of reports to help Ohio area agencies on aging, service providers, and other organizations that are not directly involved in aging services to better plan for the needs of the aging population. The purpose of this report is to provide the profile of the older population (60+) in Ohio and to project the number of older people...
