Work at the Seasongood Good Government Foundation

In the Summer of 2017, Alex was nominated and ultimately selected to be a Seasongood Good Government Foundation Intern. Alex first heard of the internship from Dr. Phil Russo and Dr. Mark Morris, who subsequently wrote letters of recommendation for Alex. The Foundation places its interns in various government agencies and departments in the City of Cincinnati. Despite "having no previous experience in local government administration, the summer has been a great learning exercise for" Alex as he finishes his final year at Miami.

In this internship, Alex has worked alongside city manager Harry Black's office in the Office of Budget and Evaluation to work with Cincinnati's budget analysts. Recalling his experience, Alex states that he "hit the ground running doing research for the analysts and helping answer questions from city council about the city manager's recommended budget" all in the midst of a hectic budget season. With Cincinnati facing a $26 million deficit, "many difficult decisions had to be made by the budget analysts, the city manager, and city council to close that gap and pass a structurally balanced budget."

Beyond Miami and Looking Back

From this internship, Alex has "enjoyed watching career public administrators operate on a day-to-day basis and see the inner-workings of a municipal government." After graduating from Miami, Alex hopes to find work in Washington D.C. as a Congressional staffer or a committee staffer, doing similar work as he did in the Seasongood internship. Alex has also expressed his interest in earning a Master's degree in Public Administration and eventually working as a Congressional legislative assistant.
