The Department of Teacher Education offers a wide variety of graduate courses, workshops and masters programs to K-12 professionals, designed to meet the challenges of 21st century teaching and learning. We will assist you in reaching initial teacher licensure, add important credentials to your current teaching license (such as the Reading endorsement), or advance in your career as a transformative teacher-leader.

You will be taught by our highly regarded faculty, and benefit from the small classes, personal attention, and interaction with faculty for which Miami is known.

Our programs are offered in a variety of formats and locations, including both online and hybrid (a combination of face-to-face and online). Many courses and workshops are available at Miami’s Voice of America Learning Center, conveniently located off I-75 in West Chester, providing easy access to educators in Southwest Ohio.

Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.)

This program prepares you for your initial teacher license, for grades 7 through 12, in mathematics, science, social studies, English/language arts, or foreign language. Students typically have a bachelor’s degree in one of these content fields, and in the MAT will pursue graduate level pedagogy, methods, and foundations courses needed for licensure.

Master of Education in Literacy & Language (M.Ed.)

This 31 hour program is designed for those who have any teaching license (including licenses in areas such as art, music, health, etc.) and want to become immersed in intensive content and methods of reading and literacy. The Masters in Literacy and Language prepares you to work as a reading specialist in Ohio schools and communities, as well as for Ohio’s 3rd reading guarantee. The program also boasts a supervised summer reading clinic practicum that provides intensive experience working with struggling readers and writers.

Master of Education in Transformative Education (M.Ed.)

This program prepares you to provide leadership in transforming teaching and learning in schools and communities. The program is framed around understanding the economic, political and social context of schools and communities, and how these shape the abilities of educators and community members to enact change. The program also emphasizes the development of key skills for transforming classrooms and schools, including an emphasis on curricular innovation, data informed-decision making, and educational leadership. Particular attention is paid to addressing issues of equity within education and developing leadership skills for improving instruction and student achievement.

Foreign Language Licensure-Only (Non-degree) Program

The program is designed for those who are interested in becoming World Language K-12 teachers in the state of Ohio. The Licensure Only program is comprised of a set of courses that allows completers to apply for a State of Ohio K-12 World Language teaching license. Upon completion of the program, students will be eligible to apply for an Ohio teaching license.

TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Endorsement

Prepares P-12 educators to work effectively with English language learners. Our courses provide real-world understanding and practical strategies to address the lingusitic, cultural and academic issues facing English language learners and their teachers in schools.

Reading Endorsement

The program provides the very latest in best practices for working with struggling readers, including a supervised practicum. The program provides insights into cultural and linguistic factors that affect literacy development and research practices that inform assessment and instructional design.
