Bargaining Summary, Nov. 25, 2024
Since the beginning of these negotiations, the University has committed to negotiating in good faith to reach an agreement with Faculty Alliance of Miami Librarians (FAM-L) that recognizes the dedication of our librarians while also balancing the University’s obligation to advance its educational mission, support its students, and ensure the equitable application of policies, procedures and practices for all University employees, which includes librarians, as unclassified administrative staff. Furthermore, as a public institution, the University has an obligation to be a responsible steward of public funds and student tuition. The University’s negotiating committee balances all of these various considerations when evaluating and responding to proposals.
Despite claims of a perceived reduction in services as reflected on recent door hangers distributed by FAM-L in Oxford, the Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR), part of University Global Initiatives, as well as the University Lecture Series, continue to provide robust community programming and will do so going forward. Visit the University Events Calendar to learn more about the many university events open to the public.
The University remains committed to engaging in good faith negotiations and reaching an initial contract agreement with FAM-L. The parties have made good progress toward reaching an initial contract, meeting regularly in person as well as holding small-group collaborative working sessions – all in our continued effort to reach a contract. A joint working group made up of Library administration and FAM-L members has been meeting outside of negotiations to discuss and create criteria tables to assist librarians throughout their promotional process.
During the November sessions the parties reached five separate tentative agreements covering No Strike/No Lockout, Discipline and Discharge, Grievance and Arbitration, Personnel Committee, and Committee Procedures. To date, the parties have reached 15 tentative agreements for the initial contract and continue to discuss and pass proposals on the remaining items. The parties have already selected two dates in December to make further progress toward an initial contract.
