Bargaining Update October 9, 2024
The University met with the faculty bargaining committee on October 9, 2024 for continued collective bargaining negotiations for the faculty contract. The Union presented counter proposals on Leaves and Academic Leaves. The leaves article of the collective bargaining agreement is intended to outline certain benefits, such as FMLA, sick leave, military and court leave, parental leave, unpaid personal leave, jury duty and testimony leave, that bargaining unit faculty members are entitled to participate in as employees of the University. It is the University’s intent that bargaining unit faculty members’ participation in these benefits mirror that of other employees at the University. On the other hand, the academic leaves article of the collective bargaining agreement sets forth specific benefits that are available only to bargaining unit faculty members, such as the Faculty Improvement Program and Assigned Research Appointments. The University’s goal with these faculty specific benefits is for the negotiated provision to follow current policy.
The University presented counter proposals on Appointment and Promotion of Tenure-Track and Tenured Faculty, Appointment, Renewal and Promotion of TCPL Faculty, Faculty Evaluations and Benefits. The provisions relating to tenure-track, tenured and TCPL faculty set forth the terms and conditions of employment for bargaining unit faculty members. The proposal on faculty evaluations outlines the University’s proposed ongoing evaluation process and performance standards for bargaining unit faculty. Lastly, the University’s benefits proposal outlines the insurance benefits that are available to bargaining unit faculty members as employees of the University.
The parties also entered into tentative agreements on Academic Freedom, Separability and Agreement Construction. The parties have now reached tentative agreement on 13 provisions for the faculty contract. The University and Union bargaining committees are scheduled to meet again on October 24, 2024 at the Hamilton Regional Campus.
